Letter 24

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

For your regulars, I am so sorry to close on you last week but I had to be in DC for the experience of witnessing the inauguration.  For you newcomers, welcome to winter veggies!  We are so fortunate to have farmers that have put in the extra hours doing everything they can to keep our food alive and growing in these trying temperatures.  Hopefully the worst is behind us.  This week we have yummy produce from several farms.

Steve Miller’s farm is providing us with great carrots again as well as the spinach and Brussels sprout greens.  Just cook these as you would any other dark leafy green.  I find they have a rather sweet flavor to them.  I love my greens, and Full Moon Farms has once again given us gorgeous salad greens.

The one thing many of you might not be familiar with isl the Sunchokes or Jerusalem artichokes as they are also called.  They look like a ginger root but you can just clean them, and slice them raw into a salad.  That is my favorite way of eating them.  You can also sauté them with other vegetables. Below is your list of goodies for this week:

Mixed salad greens
Collards
Sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes)
Brussel sprout greens
Cilantro
Baby spinach
Carrots
Onions

As we go through the winter try to think about the wonderful Georgia neighbors that put so much work into growing and bringing you healthy vegetables and savor every bite. Remember, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call me.  I am always happy to talk FOOD!

Namaste,

New Beginnings

January 20th, 2009 by Margie

January is all about new beginnings for a lot of us.  We associate the New Year with a chance to start over.  Some of us start a new exercise regime, a healthy diet or quit a nasty habit like smoking or overindulging in sugars.  Well, this January is definitely a new beginning and hopefully we are all coming together to kick a nasty habit.

Yes, it is important to quit eating all the poisons that industry farming is pumping into our produce but I am referring to nasty habit that has been occupying the White House for eight years.  Most of you know that I do not hide my politics and I am certainly celebrating the hope of a new administration to lead our nation.  We will all come together this January 20th to witness the inauguration of that new leader, Barack Obama.  I am so hopeful that the nation will come together under this new leadership that I am traveling to our Capitol to personally step foot on the lawn of the Mall for that special morning.

As I travel to Washington D.C., I will reflect on my high hopes that our new administration will acknowledge that we have a problem with access to healthy food in our communities.  Why can’t our President be a shining example by having a small organic garden for the White House?

Dear Vegetable Husband customer,

Brrrrr!  Cuddle up and maybe make some soup this week.  It is going to be COLD!  The farmers worked so late on Tuesday to cover and protect your food.  Unfortunately, many items fell prey to the freeze last night.  Your kale bags look like they are a measured illegal substance because of the cut that nature took from us.  That’s ok because you have lots of wonderful salad greens and beautiful rainbow chard this week.

There is also a pint of brussel sprouts in our baskets for the week.  I am loading a simple and delicious recipe on the website for those of you who are shy of this veggie.  Try it!! We are also lucky to have carrots one more week.  Steve Miller’s farm also had some sweet potato fingerlings tucked away.  He shared these with us this week as a bonus.  Some might not be as vibrant as others.  You can always use them for soup stock.

PLEASE remember that I am in DC this next week and vegetable husband is closed for the changing of our nations’ leadership.  Let’s all try to get Obama to put an organic garden somewhere around that White House.  I know I am writing my letter!  Maybe he can ask Mrs Reagan where Ronnie put Jimmy’s solar panels, too.  (grins)

Below is your list of goodies for this week:

Mixed salad greens
kale
rainbow Swiss chard
brussel sprouts
cilantro
sweet potato fingerlings
Carrots
Onions

For you new folks joining our community this week, please enjoy and know that the amounts do vary from week to week based on local farm availability.  This might be a slightly skinny week, but savor every bite.  I know I do and it makes me feel great!

Remember, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call me.  I am always happy to talk FOOD!

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

Happy New Year!  With all the unpredictable weather this season, our farmers are working overtime trying to keep food going for us.  I feel fortunate that all this effort is being done for our community to have great fresh healthy choices for our table.  This week is no exception.  We have veggies from four different farms, Full Moon in Athens, Taylorganics, Steve Miller’s Farm in Clarkston and Whippoorwill Hollow Farm in Walnut Grove.

As we all enter a new year, I am overwhelmed with the old cliché, “you are what you eat.”  My father spent most of this last week in the hospital and all I discussed with doctors over and over were his poor eating habits.  Think how much we are loving our bodies when we take that extra time to clean the salad this week, rather than picking up some pre-packaged food.  Think about how much more nutrients fresh picked vegetables give your body rather than food that has been sitting in coolers and trucks waiting to arrive at market.  It might be a little late for my dad to think about lifestyle changes and diet choices but it’s not for me.  Join me in making conscious decisions each day to pass over food that is loaded with crazy chemicals for a fresh, tasty treat for our taste buds and our body.  I can’t say I always make the right decision, but I always think about it.  (smiles)

Below is your list of goodies for this week:

Mixed salad greens
Bok choy
Swiss chard
Turnips with greens
Cabbage
Carrots
Onions

Enjoy your bounty and please wash these greens and herbs well!  We are still working on the new website, so look for a different look in 09.  I am really focusing on making everything user-friendly.  If you have requests or suggestions, let me hear from you.

Remember, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call me.  I am always happy to talk FOOD!
