Letter 34
April 8th, 2009 by Margie
Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
Tonight is Passover, this weekend is Easter and we are in the middle of Spring break so whichever holiday or occasion you choose to honor, I hope this wonderful harvest of food will assist you. Full Moon harvested a load of swiss chard so you have a huge bouquet as well as the other gorgeous greens. We have a new delicacy this week and that is the small arrangement of Austrian pea tendrils. This is the top of the pea plant and you can eat raw as a sprout or in a stir fry. I ate mine in the car on the way home.
You each have one large stalk and several small ones of the green garlic on a bunch together. These are separate from your bunch of green onions. If you get them confused, smell them. The garlic will always come through.
Our farm in Athens is really having a rough season. As I walked and harvested our green garlic stalks this morning (yes I worked!), the fields were full of empty holes that were supposed to be cabbages such as cauliflower and broccoli. The tough part of organic is sometimes other critters get the food before us! I bought all the food he could harvest today to help them out. Enjoy the lovely week of greens for our holidays. Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Swiss chard
Collards
Russian Red Kale
Spring Onions
Carrots
Green garlic
Austrian pea tendrils
Parsley
I want you all to know that I have been struggling caring for my father is the dutiful daughter and taking care of our weekly veggie needs really makes me happy and restores my energy. It also helps me remember how very important simple healthy food is. Enjoy and remember, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call me. I am always happy to talk FOOD!
Namaste,
Margie Thorpe
