Letter 33
April 1st, 2009 by Margie
Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
We are entering into April now and hopefully the farms will start to see the fruits of their labor soon. The rain is good for the soil in moderation but some of the extreme rainfall we have had is washing away all the hard work that has been done to the organic grounds. At Full Moon Farms the once rich ground planted with potatoes for the summer is now a puddle of water and sand. It will take some work to get things back to a good balance. Because of the late start to our spring harvest, we have reached out to more farmers for food. This week we are excited to have beautiful bunches of radishes and spring onions from Crystal Organics Farm. The collards are grown in East Point by Truly Living Well Farms and next week we might have more spinach from the Scharko Farm again. Let me know if you enjoyed that as much as I did last week. Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Arugula
Rainbow chard
Heirloom lettuce head
Collards
Russian Red Kale
Spring Onions
Radishes
I wanted to pull a fun April Fool’s joke on you by starting this letter telling you that not everything was organic or local but to me, jokes should be funny and thinking that you are mixing beautiful local food with GMO plants is not…funny, that is. BE aware of what you eat and where it came from. Ask your server if he or she knows where the meat or vegetables are from when you are ordering at a restaurant. Sometimes they look at you like you have two heads but is that SUCH a strange thing to want to know? Did my shrimp come from Georgia’s Gulf or was it frozen for a year and flown in from Thailand?
We recently asked where the Salmon was from that we were considering and the waiter looked at us like we were kidding. He then replied, “the Cysco truck.” I laughed all night. We all had a nice time and the waiter kept repeating his joke on everything he served to us. He might want to know where his food comes from one day too. If not, we all had a good time that night with the laughter. That is really good for your health, too. I am including a wonderful little section from Bon Appetit on greens. Enjoy and remember, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail or call me. I am always happy to talk FOOD!
Namaste,
Margie Thorpe
