Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

Feeling a kinship to the post office, but rain or shine we are gathering the food this week.  Today we wake up in the aftermath of the hurricane weather this week with flooded farms once again.  Neal Taylor was brave enough to dig in the muck and harvest beautiful root vegetables for us despite the weather.  Hail to the carrots!  Not only do we have his carrots, but we’ll enjoy the parsnips again and a spicy daikon that can be eaten raw in salad or cooked like a turnip.  The greens from this are great to cook as well.

Jason at Full Moon Farms was hit a little harder.  We were barely able to get out with our broccoli greens this week.  Our thoughts go out to him as he recovers from six inches of water in one day.  Your sweet peppers are the last harvest from Full Moon, and Andy at Whippoorwill Farms has shared a wonderful little pepper called a Nepalese.  You each have a couple of these.  They look like a little delicate bell.  I highly recommend enjoying these raw.  The flavor is great! Below is your list of goodies for this week:

Broccoli Greens
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Parsnips
Daikon with Greens
Tatsoy
Sweet Peppers
Green Onions
Nepalese Pepper

Next week is our last regular delivery before the Thanksgiving holiday.  Please remember that we will be delivering on Tuesday rather than Wednesday.  We will also have the form for you to choose what vegetables you would like for your Thanksgiving holiday on the website.  It will go live by next week.  Be sure to check that out.

Although the weather this year has been really challenging to the farms, we are still looking forward to a late fall crop of lettuce and other colder weather delights.  Have patience my friends, enjoy your fall color this week, and remember I’m always happy to talk food.

Namaste,
Margie Thorpe

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

As we can all see, the seasons they are a changin’.  The fall leaves are spectacular on the road today, the full moon was amazing last night, and the food that’s growing under the sun and moon looks amazing this week.  I know I threatened before, but this is truly the last pick of the eggplant and peppers.  The winter temperatures have confirmed that.  The good news is these same temperatures are bringing on all of our lovely fall greens.

This week we will enjoy some greens as well as broccoli flowers from Full Moon Farms.  We also have mixed Asian greens from Neal Taylor’s farm and his delicious parsnips again.  Brooks and Camille have shared their clustering green onions with us, and your parsley is coming from Whippoorwill Hollow Farm this week.   For those of you that raved about the tart tasty sorrel, we have more!  I really love using Becky’s recipe for sorrel pesto.  It was super easy and extra delish!  This week’s recipe will help you with ideas for your parsnips and green onions.

Below is your list of goodies for this week:

Black Beauty Eggplant
Mixed Sweet Peppers
Broccoli Leaves and Flowers
Mixed Asian Greens
Parsnips
Beets with Greens
Sorrel
Clustering Green Onions
Flat Leaf Parsley
A Few Mild Hot Peppers

Both you and the farmers have been asking what we plan to do Thanksgiving week.  I have full intentions of providing you with food for your Thanksgiving holiday however I will back the delivery day up to Tuesday so you can actually be cooking on that Wednesday evening.  We will all have very specific needs for our holiday meals, and I want to facilitate that.  This is why I will provide you with a menu of vegetables available from the farms from which you can choose – more details soon!  Enjoy your fall crops, and remember, I’m always happy to talk food.

Namaste,
Margie Thorpe
