Letter 70

December 16th, 2009 by Margie

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

This week’s food is bountiful and a nice variety.  We are coming to the end of the growing season for most of our farms.  Enjoy every bite as you move from cooking greens, to salad, to carrots.  As the temperatures get colder, we will settle into a diet of greens and onions, several varieties of greens, but the winter ground can only do so much.  Some of you were adventurous enough to cook and freeze or can some of your fall and summer veggies.  Unfortunately, I did not plan so well this year.  Thankfully I could eat sautéed greens with every meal!

We have the wonderful carrots again this week.  I met with Sara and Roots Farm in Athens when I picked these up and she said she would have plenty for us for a few more weeks.  Let me know if you love these as much as I do.  We also have a specialty item from Moonbeam Farm called winter pea greens.  These are the tiny leaves in the plastic zip bags.  They taste just like a sweet pea without the starch.  Great for salad or try them added to an omelet.  Please store them in the fridge but don’t seal the bag.  These need to be eaten in the first day or so after harvesting.  I think you will find they go quickly.

Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Baby head lettuce
carrots
Turnips
Winter pea greens
Arugula
Broccoli Greens
Mixed breakfast radishes
Cilantro

I trust that everything went well last week during my absence.  Feel free to contact me if you have any concerns.  Next week is our big holiday week once again and we will be offering a custom basket for you, so that you have exactly what you need for your special meals.  The list of available food will come to you on Friday morning.  Please respond as soon as you can so we can give the farmers plenty of notice and to assure you get the veggies you want.  There are limited supplies of some of the items.  As the year comes to an end, I want you all to know how thankful I am that you have joined me in this journey of supporting our local farmers as they work hard to support our healthy eating.  Please eat well and breathe deeply during this extra stressful month for some, and remember, I am always happy to talk food.

Namaste,
Margie Thorpe
