Letter 81

March 3rd, 2010 by Margie

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

Well I am sure that must of us are ready to round the corner of this winter weather but I assure, no one more than our farmers!  Today there was sunshine but the chilly temperatures continue to beat down on our prospects for fresh food close by.  We are still waiting for the lettuce at Serenbe and Whippoorwill Hollow to grow enough to harvest.  While we wait, I continue to borrow from farms a little further away as you know.  This week, we have several items from our Florida and South Carolina neighbors but there are still our local GA carrots, as well as the sunchokes.  Please wash your sunchokes really well this week.  They were harvested in the snow yesterday and were not washed as thoroughly as usual.

We also are fortunate to get some delicious watercress once again from Neva Farms in Bowersville GA.  I have been waiting for this to come around again.  Celia at Woodland Gardens is growing us more micro greens and they should be ready in the next couple of weeks for those of you that have asked about these.  I also asked for more of the pea shoots that we had two weeks ago.  Below is your list of goodies:

Carrots

Russian Red Kale

Green peppers

Snap beans

Sunchokes

Watercress

Pink grapefruit

Thyme / oregano

I will add the recipe for your watercress to the website this evening.  Be sure to check it out.  These are still very tough winter times even for the farms in Florida.  We are lucky to enjoy a little taste of their fruit.  I am sorry it is so little.  I am trying to get a larger load of citrus so we can have more fruit one week soon.  For now, enjoy your large grapefruit in the dead of winter.  Soon, we will be swimming in wonderful Georgia spring veggies; I just know it!  For now, go in good health this week and remember I am always happy to TALK FOOD!

Gratefully yours,

Margie Thorpe
