Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
This is a bountiful harvest this week as we gather a huge bunch of beets from Riverview Farms. Remember to eat the greens from your beets early in the week, as they do not last long out of the ground like I other greens. Maybe mix the beet greens with your turnip greens for a nice side dish for lunch one day. As many of you know, I am a big fan of greens with my eggs. You have a beautiful lime-colored green and that is your Tokyo Benaka. It can be eaten raw or sautéed lightly much like your Chinese cabbage. Between this and our lettuce, tomatoes and dandelions from Woodland Gardens, we have possibilities for incredible salads. If you are curious about the dandelions, I am adding a recipe to the website. It should post by tomorrow morning.
This might be the last of the Georgia apples so enjoy them – maybe cook a pie or some jam. I am making apple butter with the ugly fruit. You just might get a chance to taste some this winter if my cooking day goes well…This is probably the last time we will see a ripe tomato too. Celia had a sudden burst of the last plantings this week so we are fortunate to share in the bounty. Maybe we will get another harvest of the green tomatoes though. Those were great, weren’t they?! Below is your list of goodies for this week:
White turnips with greens – Moonbeam Farm
Green Onions – Moonbeam Farm
Collards – Woodland Gardens
Tomatoes – Woodland Gardens
Lettuce – Woodland Gardens
Dandelion Greens – Woodland Gardens
Beets with greens – Riverview Farm
Tokyo Benaka Greens – The Funny Farm
Yates Apples – Govus Orchard
I am working hard to gather all possible vegetables and spices available for our Thanksgiving harvest. I will send the complete list to you Friday morning. Please look for this because many items will be very limited in the amount and available to the first that reserves. Remember if you need more than your basket value, we are fine with getting it. You will receive a confirmation and a note telling you the additional amount due. We will also be offering chicken, beef and pork for Tuesday’s deliveries from Moonshine Meats so look out for that information in your extras email. I hope you all enjoy your custom baskets – it is a lot of extra work but I feel like it makes the basket so much more useful for all of us when planning for holiday meals. We will also deliver on Tuesday, Nov 23rd that week instead of Wednesday since that is Thanksgiving eve. Until next week have a blissful one and please remember, I am always happy to TALK FOOD!
Namaste,
Margie Thorpe
