Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

The basket today looks like a bundle of green, but reach beyond the leafy veggies and you will find sweet potatoes from Steve Miller Farm.  These potatoes are so tasty.  I can’t seem to do anything but roast them because they turn out so well.  We also have some tangerines coming in from our Florida friends for now.   In the next few weeks we will get more of the strawberries.  I am lovin’ having the citrus around but I can’t wait for our spring berries.

Another item coming from Florida is the celery grown by Bryson Farm.  This was driven in for us this morning.  I always want to roast a chicken when I see celery so the oven might be on at my place later.  It’s also great to just eat raw as a snack.  Of course egg salad or tofu scramble is always enhanced by chopped celery.  If you loved the spinach from Steve Miller as much as I did, you will be happy to hear that he harvested for us again!  I am dreaming of wilted garlic spinach now.  The broccoli greens are young and have some flowers with them so these won’t need too long in the pan.  Always let me know if you do anything special with them.  I love hearing YOUR recipes!

Below is your list of goodies:

Sweet Potatoes – Steve Miller Farm

Lacinato Kale – Bryson Farm

Tangerines– Uncle Matt’s Family Farm

Broccoli leaves with flowers – Steve Miller Farm

Green Onions – Steve Miller Farm

Spinach – Steve Miller Farm

Celery – Bryson Farm

Microgreens – Woodland Gardens

Well it seems like this is our season for conferences.  I was at yet another conference this week for Women in Agriculture.  I got to meet many male and female farmers from around the South as we met in Ft Valley Ga.  I am impressed that we have so much support right now from the USDA to grow our efforts for local food.  I was sad that very few conversations were about organic growing.  I guess that is why I was there!   I will keep you posted as we try to dream up ways to do more for our farmers, and bring food to more people.  I will send along any information I see that will keep all of us informed and as always, remember I am always happy to TALK FOOD!

Gratefully,

A Super Green Basket!

This week’s basket is green, green, green! I can’t wait to put that beautiful parsley into my morning green smoothies, and that bok choy and bunch of Brussels sprout greens are just begging to go into a tasty stir fry, aren’t they? On top of all those lovely greens, we’ve got summer squash this week and a pint of grape tomatoes from our friends in Florida. I told Laura Louise to look jazzed about these tomatoes, and she said she didn’t even have to act, because she was so excited about them! Read the rest of this entry »

February 22nd, 2012 by Becky Striepe

fennel

Does the fennel this week have you stumped? We have a recipe for that!

We’re seeing lots of lovely cool weather veggies this week! Broccoli, sweet potatoes, and greens, and we’re lucky enough to get grapefruit from our friends in Florida once again. Because of the downright spooky weather lately, Margie had quite the time pulling this basket together – the lineup changed quite a bit as she worked with our farmers to get us our food.

Having trouble coming up with recipes for this week’s basket? Don’t despair! These three recipes use the whole basket right up, and they’re sure to please. Read the rest of this entry »

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,

The weather is different day to day but the harvest is very slim all around.  We are calling every farm around to make sure that we continue to find great food for us during the transition.  This week’s basket is proof since we have great treats!  Woodland Gardens grew more microgreens for us and this week they harvested fennel for us too!  There will be a recipe tip on the website if you have not cooked much with this. Check it out! I am thinking root veggie paella myself but I don’t have a recipe.  If it turns out great I will be sure to share it with you on our facebook site.

We are borrowing a few items this week from our Florida farmers and grapefruits are one of them.  These are huge and juicy!  You each have broccoli again this week as well as a head of Napa cabbage.  You can always use your Napa like lettuce and make salad with it.  The website has a great recipe for Asian chicken salad made this way.  The watercress is also a nice thing for salad this week, and it is still live in the roots.  Steve Miller had a great crop of sweet potatoes for all of us this morning, too.

Below is your list of goodies:

Sweet Potatoes – Steve Miller Farm

Red Russian Kale – Bryson Farm

Grapefruit – Uncle Matt’s Family Farm

Broccoli – Bryson Farm

Napa Cabbage – Bryson Farm

Watercress – Steva Farm, Georgia

Fennel – Woodland Gardens

Microgreens – Woodland Gardens

This last weekend I went away for a political conference teaching women how to step up and run for public office.  Whether this is something I do in the future or not, please remember that our state representatives are currently in session making all sorts of decisions that affect each and every one of us.  Please support protecting our organic farming practices at all cost.  I will send along any information I see that will keep all of us informed and as always, remember I am always happy to TALK FOOD!
