Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
We have made it to September and it actually feels like fall this morning. I am sure we have not escaped the heat yet but for now, we enjoy the cooling breeze that is a reminder of a season on its way. Our food is still summer crops and we were able to get some potatoes from Full Moon farms this week. He did not lose the entire crop so enjoy these starchy treats. Full Moon also grew the butternut squash and for those of you looking for the recipe last week, I am so sorry. The butternut squash lasagna recipe will be live today and if not, please let me know. I also added another recipe for butternut squash since you have had this for a couple of weeks.
The large round green summer squash is your 8 ball and the smaller yellow and green is a 1 ball squash from Ira and Chris at Georgia’s Finest Organics south of Warm Springs. Let me know what you think because I can get more of these. They suggest a simple stuffing and baking these but they can be cooked as you would any other summer squash. Your okra, peppers, and tomatoes are also from their farm. They have just started this beautiful property as a certified organic farm so we welcome them with open arms and hungry bellies. I loved walking the grounds this morning looking at all the plants still producing. It looks like we will be getting a second crop of tomatoes from them, too. Whew!
This week we have muscadines for your fruit coming from Andy at Whippoorwill Hollow and the spice for the week is your hot peppers found in the small bag. The muscadines seem to have some soft ones but this is just from the heat. They were picked for us on Tuesday. The habaneros are so hot so be very careful when you slice them. Wearing a glove is a good way to keep the juice off your skin. Trust me, you do not want to get the juice on your hands! We also have a mix of heirloom tomatoes this week. Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Okra
Sweet banana peppers
Potatoes
8 ball squash
1 ball squash
Butternut squash
Mixed heirloom tomatoes
Muscadines
Hot peppers
Feel free to contact me this week with any questions because you know I am always happy to TALK FOOD!

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
The summer is brutal but I hope you are finding your cool spots in your mind. Every time I hear a storm brewing I run to the porch to enjoy a brief few minutes of cooler outside air. The veggies are no different. Several farms are already finding their crops slowing so this week we see a few different treats. Potatoes! I love my potatoes and Full Moon farms harvested plenty for us this week. They also brought us your butternut squash and the first okra. Let me know what you think. We will be able to get all three of these for the next several weeks.
TaylOrganics shared the pretty tomatoes with us and they will be so tasty with the tender sweet basil. Neil Taylor also harvested some rattlesnake beans for us. These are beans, not peas like last week so we can eat the entire bean. Cook them as you would any green bean. There is also a recipe on the website for them.
This might be the last week for our blueberries. We have so much other fruit coming into season that we want to take advantage of figs, melons, and muscadines, too. For now, enjoy your blueberries and look for a new flavor next week. Please let me know what you thought of the peaches last week. Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Arugula with roots
Butternut squash
Okra
Rattlesnake beans
Mixed sungold / cherry tomatoes
Potatoes
Basil
Blueberries
I hope that all of you received the announcement letter for our 2nd anniversary potluck party. It will be Friday, August 13th at Home Grown Ga Restaurant on Memorial Dr and many of your farmers will be joining us to celebrate. This is family friendly and we encourage you to bring a dish to share. Please email me when you know if you can be a part of celebration. I am so excited to meet some of you face to face! We will also be holding a contest to design a logo for vegetable husband in 2011. Bring your best ideas to the art supplies table that night. As always, I am happy to TALK FOOD!

Dear Vegetable Husband Customer,
This week has been a little crazy searching for food when we are in the middle of summer growing season. It seems that that the dry weather has severely slowed production on several summer staple for Georgia. One thing I have been really trying to get for us are the lovely zephyr squash. I promise I will find them and they will be ours! I did promise organic peaches, and this week we have them! They are not from our own Georgia farmers but only just across the line in South Carolina. Watsonia Farm does all organic fruit and participates in research for organic sustainability programs with the university there too. Let me know what you think of the peaches – we might get them again.
Serenbe is still providing us with the tasty chard this week. It is such a treat when we were missing dark leafy greens for a few weeks. We also have micro greens grown for us by Woodland Gardens. Those of you that have had these before know what a wonderful delicacy they are. I see a toasted egg salad sandwich with micro greens in my future. Alice and Tim at Mills Farm worked late into the night last night to provide us with purple hull peas today. We should be able to get more of these in the next week or two so pop them open and steam them up. They are so good raw that I can’t wait to actually enjoy a bowl of properly cooked peas. I will be sure to post a recipe to the website tonight too. Below is your list of goodies for this week:
Sweet peppers
Swiss chard
Micro greens
Purple hull peas
Juliet tomatoes
Basil
Peaches
Blueberries
I am cooking up a little celebration of our community soon. Vegetable Husband will be two years on the streets in August. I am hoping that some of you can join us for a good simple potluck with the finest ingredients Georgia can offer us. I will give you more details as I figure them out. Last week I had the good fortune of having dinner with one of our clients at a potluck. She made a gazpacho from the sweet peppers, cucumber and lemon basil from last week. Wow! It was amazing so I look forward to all of us sharing some favorite treats and celebrating all the wonderful nourishment we have right around us. That includes you! So remember, I am always happy to TALK FOOD!
All the best,
